Driving in and around Southport

Most Southport driving runs on a handful of roads, and NC 211 is the one everyone knows. NCDOT has been widening a 7.2-mile stretch of NC 211 from Midway Road to NC 87, from two lanes to four with a median, partly to give the area a safer evacuation route. Work zones, merges and new traffic patterns on a busy two-lane-turned-four-lane road are where fender benders happen.

Some commutes include a boat. The Southport-Fort Fisher ferry is part of the state ferry system and keeps a commuter schedule at peak hours, so a Southport car can spend part of its day on the Cape Fear River and the rest in New Hanover County.

Then there's Bald Head Island. You can't drive a car there. People park at Deep Point, take the ferry and get around the island by golf cart or bicycle. The Village requires golf carts and electric vehicles to be registered, limits drivers to licensed drivers, prohibits gas-powered golf carts on Village streets, and sets an 18 mph speed limit island-wide. North Carolina's rules of the road, including impaired driving laws, apply on the island.

What North Carolina requires

Every policy written or renewed since July 1, 2025 carries at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries, $50,000 for property damage, and underinsured motorist coverage. A driver first licensed after July 1, 2025 carries the inexperienced driver surcharge for 8 years, and speeding tickets and Prayers for Judgment Continued now count for 5 years.

North Carolina ties your license plate to your insurance. If your coverage lapses, your insurer notifies NCDMV. You'll owe a civil penalty of $50, $100 or $150 depending on prior lapses, and NCDMV can revoke your plate. Re-registering costs a $50 restoration fee plus the plate fee.

What usually goes wrong for Southport drivers

  1. Parking where the surge goes. During Isaias in 2020, the Weather Service reported storm surge damaged or destroyed an estimated 75 to 100 vehicles on Oak Island. Liability-only coverage pays nothing for your own car in a flood. Comprehensive does. It has to be on the policy before the storm, so add it well before hurricane season instead of waiting for a forecast.
  2. No coverage on the golf cart. A golf cart used on Bald Head Island or on neighborhood streets can hurt someone just like a car. Ask us how your policy treats golf carts; coverage varies by company.
  3. The boat trailer gap. Ask us how your policy treats a trailer you tow. Liability and damage to the trailer itself are separate questions, and the answers vary by company. The boat on it needs its own policy.
  4. Hitting a deer with liability only. About 90% of animal crashes in North Carolina involve deer, and a deer strike is a comprehensive claim. Without comprehensive, the repair is yours.
  5. State minimum limits in a contributory negligence state. If a court finds you 1% at fault, you may collect nothing from the other driver. Your own medical payments, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and collision coverage are what pay you.
  6. A visiting driver on the household car. Summer guests and grandchildren drive family cars here. Ask us how your company treats occasional drivers before the summer, not after a claim.

Common Questions

What is the minimum car insurance in Southport, NC?

The North Carolina minimum: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries and $50,000 for property damage, with underinsured motorist coverage included, on policies written or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.

Does my car insurance cover flood damage from a hurricane?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Liability and collision don't pay for flood or surge. Add comprehensive well before hurricane season, not when a storm is on the way.

Do I need insurance for a golf cart on Bald Head Island?

The Village requires golf carts to be registered and driven only by licensed drivers. Insurance protects you if someone is hurt or property is damaged. Ask us whether your homeowners policy covers the cart off your property, or whether it needs its own policy.

Am I covered on the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry?

Ask us to check. How a policy treats a car on a ferry depends on its terms, which vary by company.

How long does a speeding ticket affect my rate in North Carolina?

Five years under the rules that took effect July 1, 2025, including a Prayer for Judgment Continued.

I drive into Wilmington every day. Will that change my price?

Annual mileage and garaging address both factor into price. Tell us your real commute, because an underreported commute can cause problems at claim time.
