Driving in a town that keeps growing

Leland grew from 13,527 people in the 2010 Census to 22,908 in 2020, and the town now reports a certified estimate of 33,065. That's a lot of new drivers on the same roads. U.S. 17 runs past the Westgate shopping area toward Brunswick Forest, U.S. 74/76 and I-140 connect the town to Wilmington and I-40, and N.C. 133 (River Road) runs north of the Westport neighborhood.

For many Leland commuters, getting to Wilmington means the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, which carries U.S. 17, U.S. 76 and U.S. 421 across the river. NCDOT says the 1969 lift bridge is safe but near the end of its life, and that repairs and bridge openings cause congestion and unreliable travel times. Its replacement, estimated at $1.1 billion, held public hearings in September 2026, including one at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. Years of construction on the main route into Wilmington is something to plan around, on the road and on your policy.

New to North Carolina? Start here

If you moved here from another state, here's how North Carolina handles auto insurance:

  • Your policy has to be a North Carolina policy. Every vehicle with North Carolina registration needs continuous liability coverage from a company licensed here. NCDMV does not accept out-of-state policies.
  • The minimum is 50/100/50, with underinsured motorist coverage built in.
  • Fault works differently. Under contributory negligence, a driver found even 1% at fault may recover nothing from the other driver.
  • Timing. Put the North Carolina policy in force before you cancel the old one, so there's no gap.

What usually goes wrong for Leland drivers

  1. Keeping the out-of-state policy too long. Once you register here, it has to be a North Carolina policy.
  2. Carrying the minimum with a new house and retirement savings to protect. Anything over your limit can come after your assets. Most of the families we insure carry 100/300/100 or more, plus an umbrella.
  3. Canceling insurance on a stored car without turning in the plate. NCDMV says to return the plate before canceling coverage on a vehicle you're storing. Canceling first triggers a lapse.
  4. Skipping comprehensive. In 2018 the town says Florence's rain and sustained wind damaged every part of Leland. Flood and fallen-tree damage to your car is only covered under comprehensive.
  5. Golf carts and low-speed vehicles left off the policy. If you drive one on neighborhood streets, ask how it's covered. Coverage varies by company.

Common Questions

I just moved to Leland. Can I keep my old car insurance?

Not once the car is registered in North Carolina. NCDMV requires a policy from a company licensed in North Carolina and does not accept out-of-state policies. Line up the new policy before you cancel the old one.

What is the minimum car insurance in Leland, NC?

North Carolina's minimum: $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident and $50,000 property damage for policies written or renewed since July 1, 2025, with underinsured motorist coverage included.

What happens if my North Carolina coverage lapses?

NCDMV sends a notice. For notices issued on or after October 1, 2026, you have 30 days to respond. A lapse brings a $50, $100 or $150 civil penalty depending on prior lapses, and NCDMV can revoke your registration. Re-registering costs a $50 restoration fee plus the plate fee.

I'm storing a car for the season. Can I cancel the insurance?

Return the license plate to NCDMV first, then cancel. Canceling coverage on a car that's still registered counts as a lapse.

Why is my North Carolina rate different from what I paid in my old state?

The minimums, the built-in underinsured motorist coverage, the surcharge rules and the company pool are all different. Comparing several companies is how we find the best fit.
