Driving US 17 through Hampstead

In Hampstead, almost every trip starts on US 17 or N.C. 210. A 2012 corridor study by the Wilmington Urban Area MPO and NCDOT looked at those two roads in Hampstead specifically to cut injuries and deaths in crashes and reduce travel delay.

NCDOT's answer is the Hampstead Bypass, a nearly 13-mile new route on the US 17 corridor from N.C. 140 north around Hampstead. The northern half, from N.C. 210 to north of Hampstead, is under construction and due in late 2027. The southern half, from N.C. 140 to N.C. 210, was awarded in August 2025 and is due in 2030. That means years of work zones, lane shifts and detours on the roads Hampstead drivers use every day.

What North Carolina requires

  • Liability of 50/100/50: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries, and $50,000 for property damage, on any policy written or renewed since July 1, 2025.
  • Underinsured motorist coverage is now included in every new and renewed policy.
  • A North Carolina policy. Every vehicle registered here needs continuous liability coverage from a company licensed in North Carolina. NCDMV does not accept out-of-state policies.
  • Longer surcharges. Drivers first licensed after July 1, 2025 carry the inexperienced driver surcharge for 8 years. Speeding tickets and Prayers for Judgment Continued now look back 5 years.

What usually goes wrong for Hampstead drivers

  1. Low limits on a highway commute. Injuries from a crash at highway speed can run well past a $50,000 per-person limit. Most of the families we insure carry 100/300/100 or more, plus an umbrella.
  2. Assuming the trailer is covered. Ask us how your policy treats a trailer you tow. Liability and damage to the trailer itself are separate questions, and the answers vary by company. Ask before you haul the boat to the ramp.
  3. Liability-only on a car parked near standing water. Florence put 29.52 inches of rain on a gauge just outside Hampstead. Flood damage to a car is only covered under comprehensive.
  4. Canceling coverage on a stored truck or second car. NCDMV says to return the plate before canceling. Canceling first is a lapse, with a civil penalty of $50 to $150 and a possible registration revocation.
  5. Thin uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage. Under contributory negligence, your own coverage is often the only coverage that pays you.

Common Questions

What is the minimum car insurance in Hampstead, NC?

North Carolina's minimum: $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident and $50,000 property damage for policies written or renewed since July 1, 2025, with underinsured motorist coverage included.

When will the Hampstead Bypass be finished?

NCDOT expects the section from N.C. 210 to north of Hampstead in late 2027 and the section from N.C. 140 to N.C. 210 in 2030.

Does my car insurance cover my boat trailer?

It depends on the policy. Liability while towing and damage to the trailer itself are separate questions, and the boat on it needs its own coverage. We check all three.

I keep a truck I only use part of the year. Can I drop the insurance?

Turn in the plate to NCDMV first, then cancel. Canceling coverage on a registered vehicle triggers a lapse notice.

Why does fault matter so much in North Carolina?

North Carolina follows contributory negligence. If you're found even slightly at fault, you may recover nothing from the other driver. Your own medical payments, uninsured motorist and collision coverage carry more weight here.
