For drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025, North Carolina's inexperienced operator surcharge applies until the driver has eight years of driving experience, up from three. How much it adds depends on the company, the car and the household, which is why comparing companies matters more than it used to.

Typical means the median. Six-month policies are doubled to a full year. Not a quote; your price depends on your drivers, your vehicles and the coverage you choose.
North Carolina auto rates include an inexperienced operator surcharge for drivers with little time behind the wheel. It's one reason adding a new teen driver raises a family's premium.
The Department of Insurance explains that the surcharge was expanded for drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025. For them, it applies to insureds with less than eight years of driving experience. Before the change, the period was three years. A teenager licensed at 16 under the new rule could carry the surcharge into their mid-twenties.
The longer period means a new driver's effect on the premium lasts much longer than parents may remember from their own first car. The same rules also extended lookback periods for some violations and lengthened the surcharge for certain serious convictions to five years, so a ticket during those early years can stack on top of the inexperience surcharge.
The surcharge rules are set statewide, but each company sets its own prices, so the same teenager and the same car can be priced very differently from one company to the next. Check again at each renewal, because a company that was expensive for a sixteen year old may be competitive a couple of years later.
Which car the new driver is assigned to can change the price. So can whether the student lives at home or away at school, and which companies you compare, since each prices young drivers differently. Good driving matters too, because a clean record avoids the violation surcharges that would come on top. Ask us about the discounts each company offers, since they vary.
Call before the permit turns into a license, not after. We'll quote the household with the new driver on different cars and with different companies, so you see the real options before the renewal arrives.
