Maryland's minimum auto insurance liability limits are $30,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 of property damage, plus uninsured motorist coverage at the same amounts, which in Maryland includes underinsured motorist coverage. Insurers must also offer at least $2,500 of personal injury protection, which the first named insured can waive in writing.
The Maryland Insurance Administration lists the minimum liability coverage as $30,000 for bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage. Those are minimums. A serious crash can cost far more, and anything above your limits can fall on you, so most drivers with a home or savings choose higher limits.
Maryland also requires uninsured motorist coverage at the same minimums: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage. In Maryland, uninsured motorist coverage includes underinsured motorist coverage, which pays the difference when the at-fault driver's limits are lower than your uninsured motorist limits and your injuries exceed what they carry. Insurers also offer an enhanced underinsured motorist option.
Maryland law requires insurers to offer at least $2,500 of personal injury protection, or PIP, which reimburses medical expenses and lost wages after a crash regardless of fault. You can choose limited PIP by waiving it in writing, and certain people can reject it entirely under narrow conditions. Health insurance may cover your medical bills, but the Administration points out that PIP also pays lost wages and household members' medical expenses that health plans don't.
Insurers notify the Motor Vehicle Administration when a policy is canceled or nonrenewed. An uninsured owner can lose plates and registration privileges, pay uninsured motorist penalty fees of $200 for the first 30 days and $7 for each day after, pay a restoration fee of up to $25, and be barred from registering other vehicles until the violation is cleared.
Maryland residents turned down by at least two private insurers can apply to the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund. Before that, it's worth having us check several companies for you.
