Somebody gets a ticket on I-85 and asks me what it will cost.
The fine and court costs are not the answer. Those are a few hundred dollars. The insurance surcharge over the next three to five years is frequently several times that, and it starts at your next renewal whether or not you thought about it.
The other thing worth knowing before you pay it online: how you handle the citation is largely decided in the days before your court date, and paying it online is generally a guilty plea.
North Carolina runs two separate point systems on the same conviction.
DMV license points determine whether your license gets suspended. Twelve in three years is the threshold.
SDIP insurance points determine your premium under the Safe Driver Incentive Plan. They have no effect on your license.
The same ticket produces different numbers in each. A violation that barely touches your license can be expensive on insurance, and the reverse is also true. Both are worth looking at before you decide how to handle a citation.
Three things determine what a speeding conviction costs on the insurance side.
How far over the limit, and whether the posted limit was above or below 55.
Whether an exception applies. A conviction for speeding ten miles per hour or less over the limit can be excluded from insurance rating under specific conditions, including where the speed was not over 55 and your recent record is clean. This exception is the reason plea outcomes matter so much.
Whether you use a Prayer for Judgment Continued. A PJC within the household allowance generally prevents an insurance surcharge entirely. It is limited, so spending it matters.

The takeaway: the difference between the best outcome and the worst on the same ticket is frequently thousands of dollars over several years.

Generally three years from the conviction for most violations.
For convictions assigned four or more SDIP points occurring on or after July 1, 2025, other than convictions for speeding in excess of the posted limit, the experience and surcharge periods run five years rather than three. That change made serious violations meaningfully more expensive over time.
Know your expiration date. It is one of the most useful pieces of information you can have, because the month after a surcharge comes off is a good time to re-shop your policy.
Shopping does not remove a surcharge. SDIP surcharges are standardized statewide, so every carrier applies the same surcharge for the same points. What shopping can change is the base rate the surcharge multiplies against, which is still worth doing.
Paying online is a conviction. It resolves the ticket and it produces the full insurance consequence. If the ticket carries meaningful points, that is an expensive convenience.
A lawyer frequently pays for itself. On anything above one or two points, the surcharge exposure over three to five years usually exceeds representation costs by a wide margin. That is arithmetic, not advocacy.
A PJC is a household resource. One per household within the applicable window, which means using it on a minor ticket can leave a new driver unprotected on a worse one later. Think about who else is on the policy.
Out-of-state tickets follow you home. A conviction in another state generally reports back and is rated here.
Multiple violations from one stop can produce multiple sets of points.
Commercial drivers face separate consequences under federal rules that are outside this article entirely.
How much will a speeding ticket raise my insurance in North Carolina?
It depends on the point value and your existing record. A surcharge applies as a percentage for three years, or five for serious convictions occurring on or after July 1, 2025.
Can I just pay the ticket online?
You can, and it is generally a guilty plea with the full insurance consequence. If the ticket carries meaningful points, talk to someone first.
Will switching insurance companies help?
It cannot remove the surcharge, which is standardized statewide. It can change your base rate.
Does a defensive driving course remove SDIP points?
No. It can be relevant to license points in some circumstances and it does not remove insurance points.
Should I use a Prayer for Judgment?
Depends on the point value, your record, and whether anyone else in the household may need it. Call us before your court date.
How do I find out what this ticket is worth in points?
Ask us. We pull the record carriers rate from and we can tell you what a conviction would cost over the full surcharge period.
